Embedded mnemonics is an effective tool to help children learn the alphabets:letters and sounds.

How can embedded picture mnemonics help?

Embedded mnemonic flashcards have a picture embedded in it that resembles the actual letter shape.

For instance, in the example below, taken from our Phonics Mnemonic Flashcards:

• The letter “a”has the shape of an "a, a, apple".

• The letter“b” has the shape of a -"b, b, bee".

• The letter “c” has the shape of a -"c, c, cat".

• The letter“d” has the shape of a -"d, d, dog".

• The letter“e” has the shape of an -"e, e, elephant".

• The letter“f” has the shape of a "f, f, fish".

Phonics Mnemonic Flashcards

There are so many mnemonic flashcard sets out there—and that’s a great thing! But not all of them are created equally.

I started with a set I bought online, and it truly helped me get on the right path. It worked well for some letters… but not for all.

Why? 

Because some of the keywords simply weren’t intuitive for my child.

For example, for the letter “i” (/i/), the word used was “insect.” But my son would naturally say “bug” instead. This created confusion—and could even lead him to associate the letter “i” with the /b/ sound.

Children learn best when things feel natural and familiar to them—not forced.

So I Created My Own Mnemonic Flashcards.

My main goal? 👉 To make them extremely intuitive

Each image is designed to instantly trigger the first word that naturally comes to a child’s mind.

This became my top priority, especially because my child struggled with this exact issue.

How are embedded picture mnemonic flashcards different from alphabet cards with a visual cue?

Please don’t confuse embedded mnemonics with traditional flashcards.

Flashcards that simply show a letter with a picture ( below) are very common—but unfortunately, they are not very effective in helping children learn letter–sound relationships.

Research has shown that these types of flashcards often don’t support strong phonics learning.

In fact, they can sometimes be counterproductive. Many children learn to “guess” the answer from the picture, rather than actually understanding the sound. This can create the illusion of learning, when the connection between letter and sound isn’t truly developed.It’s not about recognizing pictures—it’s about understanding sounds.

* Avoiding confusion is key – including sound confusion! 

This is why I avoid using words that begin with consonant blends (like “gl” in glass, “gr” in grass, “bl” in black, or “br” in brick). Blended sounds are spoken quickly, making it harder for children to hear and isolate individual letter sounds clearly.

Another common mistake is choosing unclear sound words—like “ant” for the letter A. Even though it’s not a blend, the /a/ sound often gets merged with the next sound, leading to distortion. Say it slowly: “ant”—the /a/ sound isn’t as pure or clear.

Choose words with clear, isolated sounds to build strong phonics foundations.
